Hearts the way it has always been played: pass three cards, avoid the hearts and the queen of spades, and once in a while take the lot. Play against three bots right now, or make a table and send friends a four-letter code.
The game against three computer players
Pick a level and deal. Easy plays like someone who just learned the rules. Hard, the default, knows when to dump the queen, when to hold it, and when an opponent is quietly collecting every heart. Expert counts the cards it has seen and plays out the rest of the hand in its head before every card, which makes shooting the moon against it a real achievement. A solo game needs no connection and saves itself between visits.
Or with the people you actually want to beat
Make a table, share the code, and friends join from their own phones and laptops. Seats nobody has taken are played by bots until someone arrives. A player whose connection drops is covered by a bot until they are back. Tables seat three to six, and the game ends when someone reaches the target, a hundred by default, with the lowest score winning.
Your house rules are probably already here
The classic game is the starting point: the queen is thirteen, hearts are one each, passing rotates left, right, across, then a hold hand, and shooting the moon drops everyone else twenty six. From there, Omnibus scores the ten of diamonds as a bonus, Jack of Diamonds does the same with the jack, Black Maria puts points on the ace and king of spades too, and plain Hearts drops the queen altogether for a thirteen point hand. Spot Hearts scores each heart by its face. You can choose whether the two of clubs must lead, whether points may fall on the first trick, whether the queen breaks hearts, and whether shooting the moon adds to the others or subtracts from you. Taking every trick, not merely every point, can be worth double.
If you remember Hearts on Windows
For twenty years a copy of Hearts came with Windows. It began as The Microsoft Hearts Network in Windows for Workgroups, where it could play over an office network, and it stayed through 95, 98, XP, Vista and 7, usually against three named computer opponents. Later versions added Internet Hearts through the MSN Gaming Zone. Windows 8 dropped it, and a lot of people have been looking for a decent replacement since. Follow Suit is built by someone who was one of them. The pass, the three opponents, the queen you cannot get rid of: all of it is here, drawn on green felt, and this time the other three chairs can hold your friends instead of Pauline, Michele and Ben.
Free, on anything with a browser
The table fits a phone in either hand, a laptop, or a television. On a phone it can live on your home screen and open like an app, and there is a desktop app for Windows and Linux. Everything is free and needs no sign up. An optional account carries your name, presets and statistics between devices and lets you add friends and invite them with a tap. An optional membership buys card backs, felts and sounds, and nothing else.
